Early life and background

Pandu was born on 19 February 1947 in Komarapalayam, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a family connected to the Tamil film world; his elder brother, Idichapuli Selvaraj, was also a comic actor. Pandu pursued formal training in art and design, earning a postgraduate diploma from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and later completing a doctorate in arts and design in France.

Career

Pandu built a dual career in the visual arts and in performance. As a designer he created more than 250 logos for corporate and institutional clients. Among his best-known designs are the Tamil Nadu Tourism umbrella logo, for which he received a cash prize, the SUN TV logo, and the Two Leaves party symbol created under the supervision of M. G. Ramachandran. He was known to prefer working in the early morning hours for his design work and often used tactile techniques when painting, at times working with his fingertips.

Alongside his design work, Pandu developed a long-running presence in Tamil cinema and television. He made his film debut in Karaiyellam Shenbagapoo (1981), in which he appeared alongside his brother. Over the years he appeared in more than one hundred Tamil films, frequently cast in comic roles. He also acted on television, beginning with the serial Dhinam Dhinam Deepavali in 2007 and later appearing in programs including Valli, which was among his more recent TV credits.

Pandu also maintained entrepreneurial activities outside the arts. In 1975 he founded a brass and aluminium business in Chennai called Prapanj Unlimited, which he ran together with his son Prabhu.

Public profile

Pandu was a familiar face both on screen and in visual-arts circles. His painting exhibitions received media attention, and he spoke about the personal techniques that gave him satisfaction as an artist. He collaborated with family members on occasion: for example, he acted with his son Pintu Pandu in the 2013 film Vellachi and participated in exhibitions with his son Panju.

Personal life

Pandu was married to Kumudha and was the father of three sons: Prabhu, Pintu and Panju. He lived in Chennai and held Indian nationality. He stood about 177 cm (5 feet 8 inches) tall and had black eyes and black hair.

Death

Pandu died on 6 May 2021 at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 74 years old. His death was attributed to complications from Covid-19. At the time of his illness, his wife Kumudha had also tested positive and required intensive care.
