Pappu Khanna was born and raised in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He comes from a family with a background in dance: his father, Sohan Lal Khanna, worked as a choreographer. Khanna trained in classical Kathak for about eleven years under Badri Prasad Awasthi and also spent a period studying group dance at a formal dance academy. His hometown and long-term base have been Mumbai.

Career

Khanna’s professional life in film and dance began in the 1970s. He started on screen as a slow dancer in a Gujarati film and was involved in group dance sequences in major Hindi productions; one noted appearance is in the film Don (1978), where he was shown playing the flute in a song sequence. He initially choreographed for Punjabi cinema, with early credits including Lambhardarni (1976) and Sarpanch (1982).

Over subsequent decades Khanna built a wide-ranging choreographic career across multiple regional industries. His credits include Hindi films such as Laajo (1983), Jeeva (1986) and Sarfarosh (1999), and he also worked on songs in Damini (1993), Guddu (1995) and Ghatak (1996). Other films he contributed to as a choreographer include Nikaah (1982), Jai Kishen (1994), Lal Baadshah (1999) and Babuji Ek Ticket Bambai (2017). In regional cinema he choreographed for the Marathi film Kay Re Rascalaa (2017) and has worked on numerous Bhojpuri projects.

Khanna’s dance direction has been applied to a wide spectrum of performers, and he has created steps for established Bollywood stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan.
