Early life and background

Parambrata Chatterjee was born on 27 June 1980 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Raised in a family with strong connections to film and culture, his mother Sunetra Ghatak worked as a film critic and his father Satinath Chatterjee was a film and culture editor and a tabla player. He pursued higher education in the humanities and film, completing a master’s degree in English literature from Jadavpur University and a master’s in film and TV production from Bristol University in England. He attended Dolna Day School and Patha Bhavan School in Kolkata during his formative years.

Career

Parambrata made his film acting debut in the Bengali feature Hemanter Pakhi (2002), playing the character Babai. Early television work included the telefilm Sheshkritya (2003) in which he appeared as Shankho. He expanded into directing for the small screen with the telefilm Premer Galpo (2006) and later moved into feature directing with Jiyo Kaka (2011).

His profile rose nationally after his role in the 2012 Hindi film Kahaani, in which he portrayed Satyaki Sinha (Rana). That success led to offers in Bengali cinema and roles in other language films, including the Malayalam feature Balyakalasakhi (2014) and the English-language film Sold (2014), directed by Jeffrey D. Brown, in which he played Vikram. He has also worked as a producer and co-producer on Bengali projects, and in 2017 he both produced and starred as Pradosh Chandra Mitra (Feluda) in a Bengali web series titled Feluda that streamed on Bioscope and Addatimes.

As a director, his filmography includes Hawa Bodol (2013) and later Bengali features such as Shonar Pahar (2018), Tiki-Taka (2020) and Abhijaan (2022). He co-founded Workshop Productions Pvt. Ltd. in 2011 alongside Rudranil Ghosh and Dipak Raha, expanding his activity into production.

Parambrata has been recognized with several industry awards. Early in his career he won the Most Promising Actor Award at the Bengal Film Journalists' Association (BFJA) Awards in 2006 for the Bengali film Nishijapon. More recent honors include a Jury Award and a Popular Choice Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role at the Films and Frames Digital Film Awards for Dwitiyo Purush (2020), and multiple awards in 2022: Best Director and Best Feature Film for Abhijaan at the Anandlok Awards and Best Actor for the web series Aranyak at the OTT Play Awards.
