Paras S Porwal Biography

Paras Shantilal Porwal was born in Jalore, Rajasthan, in 1965. He moved to Mumbai in the early 1980s and lived in a chawl in Ambewadi, Kalachowkie, where he stayed with his sister’s family.

Early life and background

Paras Shantilal Porwal was born in Jalore, Rajasthan, in 1965. He moved to Mumbai in the early 1980s and lived in a chawl in Ambewadi, Kalachowkie, where he stayed with his sister’s family. Accounts of his early years describe modest work selling imitation jewellery on trains and sleeping near shops in the Kalachowkie area before moving into real estate brokering and construction-related businesses.

Career

Porwal began in real estate as an agent and gradually transitioned into selling plots, supplying flooring tiles to builders, and taking on redevelopment work. A significant early break came in the late 1990s when he secured the Bawalawadi redevelopment project opposite Voltas Tower in Parel. He and a partner in the chawl society later moved forward on redevelopment initiatives when government regulations opened pathways for redevelopment of older municipal buildings.

Over time he established and expanded what came to be known as the Om Shanti group, a collection of companies named after the spiritual teacher he followed. His businesses handled multiple redevelopment projects across Mumbai, including work in Wadala, Worli Naka, Chembur, Mahim, Aambewadi, Kalachowkie, Jijamata Nagar and Subhedar Nagar. Porwal’s pattern in some projects involved securing tenant consent and municipal approvals and then transferring the site to larger developers.

He operated an office in Byculla East that reportedly employed more than fifty people and founded the Paras Porwal Charitable Trust in 2016 to support feeding and relief activities. Porwal was noted for frequent donations to religious mandals during festival seasons and for naming many of his projects and companies in honor of his spiritual mentor.

Public profile

Porwal’s public life included a run for office in 2004 when he contested the Mazgaon assembly seat on a Samajwadi Party ticket; he finished third with 7,888 votes. He developed a network that included political contacts, and his funeral was attended by several local political figures.

Porwal also faced legal challenges. In 2018 he was booked by Mumbai police in connection with a slum redevelopment matter and later faced charges in a fraud and cheating case where the Bombay High Court noted allegations that multiple companies were listed in a project to claim additional Floor Space Index. He reportedly managed some twenty-three companies, with his son associated with several of them.

Personal life

At the time of his death Paras S Porwal was married to Manju Porwal. The family included a son, Rony (also referred to as Ronnie), and a daughter, Rikki; a daughter-in-law named Akruti is also mentioned. His mother’s name was Shanti Devi and he had at least one sister.

Death

Paras S Porwal died on 20 October 2022 at age 57. He died after falling from the 23rd floor of the Shantikamal Cooperative Housing Society building in South Mumbai, where he lived with his family. Authorities registered an accidental death report initially, and police reported finding a note written across multiple pages in Gujarati and Hindi. The note, according to reports, stated that no one was responsible for his death and included guidance and warnings for his family, particularly concerning risks in SRA redevelopment projects. He was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

Latest updates

At the time of his death Porwal was reportedly involved in an SRA redevelopment project at Jijamata Nagar in Worli. Media accounts describe his death as linked in part to financial difficulties in his business ventures. In addition to ongoing legal proceedings that had been reported earlier, his companies and charitable activities were noted as part of his public legacy.
