He is the son of actors Balraj Sahni and Damayanti Sahni. After his mother’s early death, his father remarried Santosh Chandhok. Parikshit spent much of his childhood in boarding schools and lived in several places including Kashmir, Dharamshala, and Ambala.
He studied at Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School in Pune and at Lawrence School, Sanawar. School of Art in Mumbai.
Career
Parikshit began acting as a child artist, appearing in the 1951 Hindi film Hulchul. Early in his career he also used the stage name Ajay Sahni, a change suggested by a close friend. A serious on-set accident during the shooting of Veer Shivaji left him with a backbone injury that took a year to recover from; he later said that recovering from those injuries felt like a rebirth and reverted to using his real name.
Over the decades Parikshit worked steadily in film and became widely recognized for supporting roles in notable Bollywood releases. Two of his well-known later appearances are in the mainstream hits 3 Idiots (2009), in which he played the father of the character Farhan, and PK (2014). In addition to his film work, he has pursued interests in painting and spent time writing: in 2019 he published The Non-Conformist: Memories of My Father Balraj Sahni, a book about his father.
