Park Gyu-Young was born on July 27, 1993, in Busan, South Korea. She attended Busan Foreign Language High School and later studied in the Department of Clothing and Environment at Yonsei University. Raised in Busan, she developed interests that would later complement a performing career: formal ballet training and an affinity for fitness practices such as Pilates.

Career

Park’s first appearances were in music videos and short-format projects. Her onscreen beginnings include a 2016 appearance in the music video for Jo Kwon’s “Crosswalk,” and small roles in web and television productions around the same time. Early credits also list a 2017 short film titled Dear and a supporting part in the 2017 feature Heart Blackened. She continued to appear in music videos for a number of Korean artists, including Kwak Jin-eon, Urban Zakapa, and Yesung.

Across 2018 and 2019 Park took on supporting roles in film and television, such as the comedy-drama film Love+Sling and the TV series Romance Is a Bonus Book and Nokdu Flower. Her first credited lead role on television came in 2020 when she played Nam Ju-ri, a nurse at a psychiatric hospital, in the tvN series It’s Okay to Not Be Okay. That same year she appeared in Dazed Korea magazine and had roles in web series including Sweet Home.

In 2021 Park featured as a lead in tvN’s legal mystery series The Devil Judge, portraying Yoon Soo-hyun, a police detective and childhood friend of the series’ central character. Her work that year was recognized at the KBS Drama Awards, where she received Best New Actress for her role in Dali and the Cocky Prince and the Best Couple Award alongside Kim Min-jae.

Park continued to build on lead roles into 2023. She starred as Seo Ah-ri, a door-to-door makeup salesperson with a wealthy past, in the web series Celebrity. In 2023 it was also reported that she would be part of the second season of the Netflix South Korean survival drama Squid Game.
