Parupalli Kashyap Biography
Parupalli Kashyap is an Indian badminton player from Hyderabad who rose through national junior ranks to become one of India's top singles players. A pupil
Early life and backgroundParupalli Kashyap was born on 8 September 1986 in Hyderabad (then in Andhra Pradesh). He grew up in a family that moved periodically because of his father's job, and that upbringing included time in cities such as Bengaluru. Kashyap began formal badminton training as a child and entered a training camp run by Syed Mohammed Arif when he was 11. He later trained at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru and, after his family returned to Hyderabad, joined the Gopichand Badminton Academy under coach Pullela Gopichand.
Kashyap faced health challenges early in his career: he was diagnosed with asthma after the family moved back to Hyderabad in 2004, and managed the condition with medication while continuing his training. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree and lists singing among his hobbies.
Career
Kashyap won the boys' singles title when he made his debut for Andhra Pradesh at the 2005 National Junior Open Badminton Championships. He moved into international competition the following year, 2006, when he was selected to represent India and began competing on the world circuit.
In his early international outings Kashyap improved his world ranking significantly. Notable wins in 2006 included victories over higher-ranked opponents at events such as the Hong Kong Open and the Bitburger Open, results that helped his ranking rise from around 100 into the mid-60s. He went on to represent India at the 2006 Asian Games and collected a string of domestic and international medals in subsequent years.
Kashyap's tournament successes include multiple national and all-India titles in 2006, and podium finishes at the 2010 Commonwealth Games where he was part of the mixed team that won silver and earned a bronze in the men's singles. He won the India Open Grand Prix Gold title in men's singles twice, in 2012 and again in 2015, and received the Arjuna Award from the Government of India in 2012.
A career highlight came at the 2012 London Olympics when Kashyap became the first Indian man to reach the Olympic quarterfinals in singles; that run helped him rise to world number 19 that year. He reached his career-high world ranking of number 6 in 2013. In 2014 he won the men's singles gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, a notable achievement for Indian badminton in that event.
Kashyap's career has seen setbacks as well as successes. He suffered a serious calf injury in 2015 which prevented him from contesting the semifinals at the Indonesia Superseries. In 2016 he competed domestically in the Premier Badminton League as a member of the Hyderabad Hunters and that same year helped India to a bronze at the Badminton Asia Team Championships.

Kashyap comes from a family with parents Uday Shankar and Subhadra. He experienced a personal tragedy in 2011 when his sister, who was living alone in Bengaluru, died by suicide. His public profile increased after the 2012 Olympic run and subsequent international results; he appeared on the cover of The Man magazine in 2015.
In his personal life, Kashyap married fellow Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal on 14 December 2018 in Hyderabad. Public reporting later stated that the couple were separated; an Instagram story posted by Saina in July 2025 confirmed the separation.
