Early life and backgroundParveen Hooda was born on 15 April 2000 in Rurki, a village near Rohtak in Haryana. She grew up in a modest household; her parents are Lakhpat Singh and Neelam, and she has a younger brother, Ravi Hooda. Parveen attended Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, Punjab.
Her introduction to boxing came as a schoolgirl when a boxing academy opened in her village in 2011. The academy, started by Sarpanch Sudhir Hooda, did not charge trainees, and Parveen’s parents enrolled her. Early inspiration came from watching Indian boxing heroes on television, which convinced her to pursue the sport more seriously.
Career
Parveen fights in the 60 kg weight class and uses an orthodox stance. Her listed height is 173 cm (5 ft 8 in) and her competition weight is around 60 kg (132 lbs). Sudhir Hooda has been her coach and played a significant role in her development; he even provided gloves and shoes early in her career when her family could not afford them.
She began collecting national and international results as a junior and youth competitor. In 2016 she won a bout at the Nations Cup Junior in Ruma, and in 2017 she claimed gold at the Youth National Championship. Over the following years she added multiple podium finishes: a South Asian Games gold in 2019, silver medals at the 2019 International President’s Cup and the Ahmet Comert Tournament, and a Khelo India Youth Games gold in 2020.
At senior national level, Parveen won the 5th Elite Women National Boxing Championship in 2021 and continued to feature at major events. In 2022 she took gold at the 71st All India Police Wrestling Cluster (AIPWC) and earned a bronze at the Women’s World Boxing Championships. One of her most prominent recent achievements was winning a bronze medal at the 19th Asian Games in 2023 in the women’s 57 kg category. That result also secured her qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics. At the Asian Games she lost in the semifinal to two-time world champion Lin Yu-ting.
Alongside her ring career, Parveen is a member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. She was promoted to Head Constable by the ITBP in December 2022.
