Pathum Nissanka Silva was born on 18 May 1998 in Galle, Sri Lanka, and grew up in a family with strong ties to cricket. His father, Sunil Silva, worked around the game and later coached at junior level. Pathum attended Kalutara Vidyalaya and later Isipathana College in Colombo. He developed as a batsman in school cricket, where a standout innings of 205 in a school championship helped raise his profile.

Nissanka is a right-handed top-order batsman who made rapid progress through Sri Lanka's domestic and age-group pathways, representing teams such as Kalutara Town Club under-23, Badureliya Sports Club, Nondescript Cricket Club and several provincial and franchise sides. He played for Sri Lanka Under-19s and emerging squads before breaking into the senior national side in 2021.
