Early life and background

Paula McGlynn was born on 8 May 1990 in Vancouver, Canada. Raised in a family with a mother who worked as a nurse, she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. While still in school she cultivated an interest in filmmaking that would shape her career.

After graduating, McGlynn took an internationally funded internship that brought her to India. That experience included research into the Indian film industry and conversations with filmmakers during workshops at institutions such as IIT Madras. Those early visits introduced her to regional cinema in Mumbai and Pune and set the stage for repeated returns to India and deeper involvement with the country’s film community.

Career

McGlynn’s creative work spans acting, directing, writing, producing and sound design. Her early film credits include roles in Canadian short films such as Across the Street (2012) and The Worst Day Ever (2012), and she appeared in the Canadian feature Mop King (2013). She also acted in Marathi and Urdu short films and took small roles in larger projects, including the Bollywood film Half Girlfriend (2017) and the Hindi web series The Final Call (2019), where she played Sarah Parker.

Her thesis film, My Uncle Terry, won the Praxis Student Screenplay Award and was screened at festivals including the Montreal World Film Festival and Moonrise Film Festival. As a sound designer she contributed to Canadian shorts including Margaret and the Dollhouse (2011), Bread of Heaven (2012), and Free Section (2015).

In India she moved quickly from research and internships into hands-on production work. She began performing roles such as Master of Ceremonies and sound engineer in North Vancouver before shifting focus to production in Mumbai. In 2014, alongside Sarang Sathaye and Anusha Nandakumar, she co-founded Gulbadan Talkies, a creative video production boutique. The company evolved from recording weddings and events into producing television and digital ads, brand films, music videos and content for major brands including ICICI Bank and Hindustan Unilever. In April 2019 Lokmat Media acquired a stake in Gulbadan Talkies.

Also in 2016, McGlynn and her partners launched the Marathi entertainment collective Bharatiya Digital Party (BhaDiPa). BhaDiPa was an early producer of Marathi digital content and found quick success with formats such as the satirical talk show Casting Couch with Amey and Nipun. Under BhaDiPa, McGlynn co-directed and appeared in web series including Pandu (2019) and Shanti Kranti (2021). Shanti Kranti premiered on Sony Liv in August 2021; McGlynn co-directed the series, played a role credited as Paula, and returned for its second season in 2023.

BhaDiPa’s output expanded into comedy, music and political infotainment. The channel network grew to include BhaDipa, Bha2Pa and Vishay Khol, and produced notable pieces such as If Hogwarts Was a Marathi School and Aaplya Baapachi. By October 2018 the collective had accumulated significant audience engagement and continued to grow, reaching one million YouTube subscribers in August 2021 and earning a Golden Play Button.

McGlynn’s producing work also includes collaborations with other creators and platforms: BhaDiPa produced the series B.E.Rojgaar in partnership with Scaler and worked with TVF on projects leading to the Shanti Kranti collaboration. BhaDiPa has been recognized with industry awards for its regional digital content and web series.

Public profile

Beyond production and acting, McGlynn leads Gulbadan Talkies as CEO and founding director. She runs a personal YouTube channel and a channel called PollywoodVlog where she posts lifestyle vlogs about working in the Indian film industry. She has been twice awarded SFU Mobility funding for research into the film industries of Canada and India and launched initiatives to connect the sectors, including the BC – Indian Film & Media Initiative. She also serves on the Indo-Canadian Business Chambers Media & Entertainment Committee, advising companies interested in cross-border collaboration.
