Pavan Ahluwalia was born on 15 November 1977 in Washington, D.C. A member of a family with a strong public-policy and economic background, he spent his childhood after his family moved to Delhi. He is the son of Montek Singh Ahluwalia, a noted Indian economist and former deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, and Isher Judge Ahluwalia, who worked in economics and public policy.

Education

Ahluwalia completed his undergraduate studies in economics at Princeton University (1995–1999). He later pursued graduate education in public policy and business, earning a Master of Public Administration in international development from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Career

After graduating, Ahluwalia took internships in Indian political offices, working in the office of the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and later in the office of the chief minister of Delhi. He began his professional career in August 1999 at the International Monetary Fund's research department in Washington, D.C., where his responsibilities included work on currency-market contagion modeling. He left the IMF in March 2000.

From October 2000 until August 2002 he worked as a business analyst at McKinsey & Company in New York, advising management teams on corporate strategy with assignments that included work in Mumbai. In September 2006 he joined Old Lane Partners in New York as an associate, covering India and parts of Asia (outside Japan) for a multibillion-dollar hedge fund.

In August 2009 Ahluwalia founded Laburnum Capital Advisors Private Limited, an investment management firm based in Delhi, and serves as its managing director. His work at Laburnum has been the central focus of his professional profile since founding the firm.
