Early life and backgroundPavan Raj Malhotra was born on 2 July 1958 in Nawabganj, Tis Hazari, New Delhi. He grew up in a family that migrated to Delhi from Lahore after the Partition. He attended Manav Sthali School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts from Hans Raj College, University of Delhi. His parents were Trilok Raj Malhotra, a businessman, and Asha Rani Malhotra. He is one of several siblings, with three elder brothers and two elder sisters.
Before entering films and television, Malhotra began his creative journey in theatre. He joined the group Ruchika and performed in plays such as Tughlak and Father. Those early stage experiences helped shape his craft and led him toward work in cinema and television, even as he also held a variety of jobs to support himself in younger years.
Career
Malhotra’s entry into the film world came behind the camera: he worked as a wardrobe assistant on Gandhi (1982) and as a production assistant on films including Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! (1984) and Khamosh (1985). He moved into on-screen roles in the mid-1980s, making his film acting debut in Ab Ayega Mazaa (1984) and drawing public attention on television as Hari in Nukkad (1986).
Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s he built a diverse body of work. He took leading and character roles in films such as Bagh Bahadur (1989) and Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989), and appeared in television series including Circus and Goongi Tareekh. He also acted in English-language films, playing Ashish in City of Joy (1992) and portraying Amir in Brothers in Trouble (1995). In 1997 he had a notable role as Sharafat Ali in Pardes.
