Early life and background
Pawan Kumar Chamling was born on 22 September 1950 in Yangang in South Sikkim. Raised in a family from Ghurbisey, Namchi, he completed schooling up to the 10th grade. His parents were Ashbahadur Chamling, a farmer, and Asharani Chamling. From childhood he was active in school leadership and in sports such as football and volleyball, representing his school in inter-school and inter-district competitions, and taking part in school dramas.

Career
Chamling began his working life in agriculture and later worked as a government contractor, participating in construction projects including roads, bridges, buildings and irrigation canals. He entered public life through party politics and local governance: he was elected block president of the Youth Congress in 1975, served as secretary of the Prajatantra Congress in 1978, and became president of Yangang Gram Panchayat in 1982.

Elected to the Sikkim Legislative Assembly in 1985, Chamling served in the Nar Bahadur Bhandari cabinet from 1989 to 1992 as Minister for Industries, Information and Public Relations. He founded the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in 1993 and became Chief Minister of Sikkim in 1994. Under his leadership the SDF won successive state elections in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. Notably, the party swept all 32 assembly seats in the 2009 Sikkim Legislative Assembly election.

Over his tenure Chamling launched the slogan “New Sikkim, Happy Sikkim” to frame policies and programmes focused on the state’s development. In 2016, during his period in office, Sikkim was declared India’s first and only Organic State, a declaration tied to the state’s implementation of organic farming and restrictions on chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

In April 2018 Chamling became the longest-serving Chief Minister in India, having led Sikkim for five consecutive terms. By completing 25 years in office he surpassed the previous record held by Jyoti Basu.
