Payal Ghosh was born on 13 November 1989 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Raised in a Bengali family, she attended St. Paul’s Mission School and later studied at Scottish Church College, earning a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science. She also completed a diploma in fashion technology. During her teens she performed in stage shows and dramas; determined to pursue acting, she moved to Mumbai at 17 and initially stayed with her eldest sister while beginning work in advertisements.

Ghosh began her screen career in 2009. That year she landed a role in the British telefilm Sharpe’s Peril and made her debut in Telugu cinema with Prayanam, playing the lead character Harika. She went on to act in multiple South Indian films, including the Telugu titles Oosaravelli and Mr. Rascal, the Kannada film Varshadhaare (2010), and the Tamil film Therodum Veedhiyile (2014).
