Pervez Musharraf Biography
Pervez Musharraf was born on 11 August 1943 in Old Delhi, British India. His family, which belonged to Sayyid nobility, moved to Pakistan after the 1947 partition when he was a child.
Early life and backgroundPervez Musharraf was born on 11 August 1943 in Old Delhi, British India. His family, which belonged to Sayyid nobility, moved to Pakistan after the 1947 partition when he was a child. He grew up in Karachi, attended Saint Patrick's High School and later studied mathematics at Forman Christian College in Lahore. His father worked in Pakistan's civil service and later served in the foreign ministry, a posting that took the family to Turkey for a period during Musharraf's youth.
Musharraf joined the Pakistan Military Academy as a young man and graduated with his class in the 29th PMA Long Course in 1964. He went on to further military education at institutions including the Command and Staff College in Quetta, the National Defence University in Islamabad, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London, where he pursued postgraduate study around 1990.
Career
Musharraf's professional life was defined by a long military career spanning from 1961 to 2007. He served in the Regiment of Artillery and rose through the ranks to become a four-star general. Early battlefield experience included the Indo-Pakistani conflicts of 1965 and 1971, and he served in mountain and arctic environments such as Siachen. He joined Pakistan's Special Service Group and held a company command during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
Promotions and appointments followed decades of service. By 1991 he had reached the rank of major general. In October 1998 he was appointed Chief of Army Staff, and in April 1999 he became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In October 1999 he led a coup that removed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and made Musharraf the head of government. He later assumed the presidency and remained Pakistan's central political and military figure through the 2000s.
Musharraf's presidency included a series of constitutional and political actions: he assumed the title of president, oversaw amendments that altered executive powers, secured a parliamentary vote of confidence that extended his mandate to 2007, and won a presidential election that year according to unofficial counts. In November 2007 he declared a state of emergency, suspended the constitution and postponed national elections; days later he stepped down as army chief and swore the presidential oath for a third time. He resigned the presidency in August 2008.
Musharraf had a long record of involvement in regional conflicts, from the Kargil War to operations in Pakistan’s northwest and the broader civil war in Afghanistan in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His military service earned him several Pakistani honours, including Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Tamgha-e-Basalat and Imtiazi Sanad, and at least one foreign honour, the Order of al-Saud.
Public profile
Musharraf’s name remained prominent in Pakistani public life after he left formal office. He launched the All Pakistan Muslim League in October 2010 after announcing plans to return to politics. His years in power and subsequent legal battles generated controversy and prosecutions; among the matters listed during and after his presidency were events related to the suspension of the constitution in 2007, the 2007 state of emergency, and later charges including treason proceedings. In December 2019 a special court in Pakistan handed down a death sentence in a treason case related to his actions in 2007.
He published a memoir in 2006 titled In the Line of Fire: A Memoir, reflecting on his life and times in uniform and politics. Personal details often noted in accounts of Musharraf include a lifelong interest in dogs, a reputation for reading and travel, and nicknames used by family and colleagues.
