Pete Buttigieg Biography

Pete Buttigieg is an American politician, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, naval intelligence officer, Rhodes Scholar and 2020 presidential candidate.

Early life and background
Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg was born in South Bend, Indiana, on January 19, 1982. He grew up in the same South Bend neighborhood where he later returned to live as an adult. Buttigieg attended Stanley Clark School through eighth grade and graduated from St. Joseph High School, where he served as valedictorian of his class. He won the JFK Profiles in Courage Essay Contest while in high school, an honor that took him to Boston to meet members of the Kennedy family.

Buttigieg went on to Harvard University, earning a degree in history and literature in 2005. At Harvard he was active in campus civic life, serving as president of the Harvard Institute of Politics Student Advisory Committee and writing an undergraduate thesis on Puritan influences in U.S. foreign policy. After Harvard he won a Rhodes Scholarship to Pembroke College, Oxford, where he completed first-class honors in philosophy, politics and economics.

Career
After Oxford, Buttigieg worked in consulting and public policy roles, including a spell at McKinsey & Company from 2007 to 2010 and earlier positions in Washington and as an investigative intern at a Chicago television station. He served as an adviser or staffer on several Democratic campaigns and worked briefly for an international strategic consulting firm.

Buttigieg’s formal political career began in Indiana. He was the Democratic nominee for Indiana State Treasurer in 2010 and, in 2011, won election as mayor of South Bend. Taking office in January 2012 at age 29, he became one of the youngest mayors in the city’s history. While mayor he launched programs to address blight and urban design, most notably an initiative to demolish or rehabilitate thousands of vacant properties in a short period and an urban redevelopment effort called Smart Streets that converted one-way streets to two-way, widened sidewalks, added bike lanes and introduced roundabouts.

His time as mayor included visible administrative decisions such as personnel changes in the police department, and he received recognition from municipal and national outlets; GovFresh named him a mayor of the year in 2013, and national newspapers took note of his combination of youth, education and military service.

Alongside his municipal work, Buttigieg served in the United States Navy Reserve. Commissioned as a naval intelligence officer in 2009, he rose to the rank of lieutenant and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 for seven months, working with a counterterrorism unit focused on disrupting insurgent financing. He remained in the Naval Reserve until 2017.

In 2019 Buttigieg launched a campaign for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential election, bringing national attention to his profile and record as a mayor, veteran and political thinker.

Public profile
Buttigieg combines public service with a broad set of personal interests. He is multilingual, able to speak Spanish, Maltese, Italian, French, Farsi and Arabic, and he taught himself Norwegian. He plays guitar and piano professionally and has performed publicly, including an appearance with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. He has written a memoir about his time as mayor and his vision for civic life, titled Shortest Way Home: One Mayor’s Challenge and a Model for America’s Future.

In a 2015 essay he publicly disclosed his sexual orientation as gay. He later met Chasten Glezman in 2015; the couple became engaged in December 2017 and married on June 16, 2018, at the Cathedral of St. James in South Bend. They live together in Buttigieg’s childhood neighborhood with two rescue dogs. Buttigieg’s parents were academics: his father, Joseph Buttigieg, a Maltese immigrant and literary scholar, and his mother, Jennifer Anne, a longtime professor at the University of Notre Dame.

Latest updates
Buttigieg stepped away from seeking a third term as mayor in late 2018 and announced his presidential campaign in April 2019. His career has included honors such as selection as an Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow and the John F. Kennedy New Frontier Fenn Award, and he continues to be noted for initiatives on urban renewal and local governance.

Personal details
Buttigieg’s listed height is approximately 173 cm (5 ft 8 in) and weight about 70 kg (154 lb). His eye color is described as lavender gray and his hair dark brown. He identifies culturally with Christianity and has cited an Anglican sensibility. He is American by nationality and of Maltese heritage on his father’s side. His hobbies include reading, writing, playing music and recreational sports.
