Pinki Singh (Lawn Bowl) Biography
Pinki Singh is an Indian lawn bowler from New Delhi who was a member of the quartet that won India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in lawn bowls
Early life and backgroundPinki Singh was born on 14 August 1980 in New Delhi, where she grew up and continues to live. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in Delhi and later took a sports course at the National Institute of Sport in Patiala. Singh’s home city and early education influenced her later work in school sports.
Before turning to lawn bowls, Singh trained in cricket and worked in a school setting. In 2005 she joined Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram as a cricket coach and was employed as a physical education teacher after completing her sports training. Her involvement with school sport provided the setting where she first encountered lawn bowls.
Career
Pinki Singh began playing lawn bowls recreationally in 2007 while at DPS, R.K. Puram, which served as a practice location for lawn bowls players. Over time she moved from recreational play to representing India at international events.
Her international medal record includes podium finishes across Asian competitions and a landmark top finish at the Commonwealth Games. Singh earned bronze at the Asia Pacific Bowls Championships in 2009. At the Asian Lawn Bowls Championships she collected bronze in the women’s triples in 2014, silver in the women’s triples in 2016, and bronze in the women’s fours in 2016. The next year she was part of the team that won gold in the women’s triples at the 2017 Asian Lawn Bowls Championship.
The pinnacle of her career came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she was a member of the Indian fours team that defeated South Africa in the final to claim gold. That victory marked India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in lawn bowls and was widely celebrated back home.
Following the 2022 success, Singh’s contributions to sport were formally recognised when she received the Arjuna Award on 9 January 2024.
Public profile
Singh has been coached by Madhukant Pathak, a former cricket umpire, during her development in the sport. Colleagues and school staff have spoken about her determination and focus; she continued to prioritise training despite setbacks, including limited preparation during the COVID-19 pandemic and a knee injury.
Her Commonwealth Games achievement drew attention from national leaders and the media. After the team’s gold-medal performance, the Prime Minister of India publicly congratulated the quartet, noting the historic nature of the win and its potential to encourage more interest in lawn bowls across the country. Singh herself described the victory as a dream come true and spoke of the emotional significance of improving on a narrow loss from 11 years earlier.
Personal life
Singh’s public biographical details identify her as a native of New Delhi. She is 163 cm tall (about 5 feet 4 inches) and her weight is listed at approximately 55 kg (121 lbs). Her eye and hair colour are reported as black. Her zodiac sign is Leo.
Little information about her marital status is publicly available; sources list marital status as not known and do not provide details about a spouse. She is reported to live with her father in Delhi.
Latest updates
In addition to the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold, Singh’s recognition with the Arjuna Award in January 2024 stands as a recent highlight. Her competitive record at regional and continental events, combined with that historic CWG success, continues to define her profile in Indian lawn bowls.
