Early life and background

Piyush Gurbhele was born on 6 January 1999 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Growing up in Nagpur, he developed a passion for dance early on and practised by watching television and online videos. His family includes his mother Lata Gurbhele, his late father Kishore Gurbhele who worked in a bank, and a brother, Kinshuk Gurbhele. Piyush’s hometown and roots in Nagpur have been a consistent part of his identity as he built his dance career.

Career

Piyush’s public dance journey began with auditions for television dance shows. His first notable television appearance came in 2017 on Dance India Dance Season 6, where he performed as part of the Mini Pradhan team and finished as the second runner-up. During that competition he earned the nickname Nagpur ka Toofan.

After Dance India Dance, Piyush continued to refine his craft. He trained at Poison Rock Star Dance Academy and later at Dance Addiction Dance Academy to develop choreography skills. A long-term mentor, Amol Gotekar, supported Piyush’s training for many years, teaching him free of charge and helping with expenses when Piyush could not afford class fees or travel costs. That mentorship is credited by Piyush as a major influence on his rise.

Piyush and his friend Sanket Gaonkar launched a dance school together called Sankush classes, a name combining elements of both their names. The pair ran classes and workshops across several cities in Karnataka and held sessions with dance groups in Maharashtra and West Bengal.

Piyush rose to national prominence when he joined Dance Deewane Season 3. On that show he partnered with choreographer Rupesh Soni; their collaboration generated multiple well-received performances. On 10 October 2021 the pair were declared winners of Dance Deewane Season 3, receiving a golden trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 40 lakh. Piyush has described the competition journey as full of learning, ups and downs, and intense emotion at the moment of victory.

Public profile

He lists Dharmesh Yelande and Michael Jackson among dancers he admires, and he has been referred to in media and fans’ circles as Nagpur ka Toofan. Physically, he is approximately 162 cm (5'4") in height and about 55 kg (120 lbs) in weight, with black hair and dark eyes. He also has tattoos, including a Lord Buddha face on his right arm.

Piyush began a YouTube channel in 2015 under his own name, where he posts dance videos. In September 2021 he was presented with YouTube’s silver play button in recognition of reaching the subscriber milestone associated with that award.

Personal details

Piyush’s date of birth places him under the Capricorn zodiac sign. He is unmarried. Hobbies he has mentioned include travelling and swimming. Early in his journey his mother asked him to focus on studies and a stable profession, while his father and brother were supportive from the start; over time, as his dance achievements grew, his mother’s attitude became more encouraging.
