Early life and backgroundPiyush Mishra was born Priyakant Sharma on 13 January 1963 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Raised in a family that later adopted him through his father’s eldest sister, he attended Carmel Convent School and JC Mills Higher Secondary School in Gwalior. Even as a schoolboy he gravitated toward creative pursuits — writing poetry and taking part in singing, acting and painting — and began using the name Piyush Mishra after completing his matriculation.
With a determination to pursue the performing arts he sat for the entrance examination to the National School of Drama in 1983 and completed his acting training there, graduating in 1986. While at NSD he composed music for a Parsi play and, during his second year, was cast in the title role of Hamlet by German director Fritz Bennewitz. After finishing his studies he moved into theatre direction and, in 1990, assisted in launching the theatre group Act One.

Mishra’s career spans acting, poetry, songwriting, composition, singing, dialogue writing and screenwriting. His on-screen debut came with the television series Bharat Ek Khoj in 1988. He transitioned to films with a Hindi cinema breakthrough in Dil Se (1998) and subsequently worked in other regional industries, including Tamil (Samurai, 2002) and Telugu (Super, 2004).
Beyond acting, Mishra has made a mark as a lyricist and composer. He wrote lyrics for the song "Pagal" from Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!! (2000) and contributed to the music and songs of films such as Gulaal (2009), for which he sang and composed. He has also worked as a dialogue writer on high-profile projects, including The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002), and as a screenwriter, with a credited screenplay on Yahaan (2005).
His entry into mainstream cinema was helped by casting connections in the industry; director Mani Ratnam gave him a role in Dil Se after a recommendation from casting director Tigmanshu Dhulia. After two decades in Delhi working in theatre and building his creative profile, Mishra relocated with his family to Mumbai in 2003 to pursue wider film and music opportunities.
