Early life and background
Piyush Pandey was born on 9 April 1955 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s School in Jaipur and went on to earn a Master’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. Before entering advertising, Pandey worked as a tea taster and played cricket at the Ranji Trophy level for Rajasthan during his college years.

Career
Pandey began his long association with Ogilvy in 1982, joining as a client-servicing executive. His first written advertisement was a print ad for Sunlight detergent. In 1989 he moved into the creative department and over the next years rose through the ranks: promoted to creative director in 1992, later national creative director, and by 1994 he had become a board member. He was appointed Executive Chairman for India and South Asia in 2004 and in 2019 took on the role of Chief Creative Officer Worldwide. In September 2006 he was nominated to the Ogilvy Worldwide board and he later moved into a broader advisory and leadership position at Ogilvy India beginning 1 January 2024.

Across roughly forty years at Ogilvy & Mather, Pandey helped the agency become the largest advertising house in India. His work includes many campaigns that became widely recognized across the country: the Pulse Polio campaign with the slogan “Do Boond Zindagi Ke,” the Fevicol series of ads, Fevikwik spots with the line “Todo Nahin, Jodo,” Cadbury Dairy Milk campaigns, Ponds advertising, Vodafone campaigns featuring the pug and the ZooZoos, and Asian Paints’ “Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai.” He is credited with writing the patriotic song “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” for the 1988 National Integration campaign. He and his brother Prasoon co-wrote the story for the 1999 film Bhopal Express. Pandey also appeared on screen as the Cabinet Secretary in the 2013 film Madras Cafe.

Awards and recognition
Pandey received numerous honors over his career. He was named by The Economic Times as the most influential person in Indian advertising for eight consecutive years. His work earned international accolades including double gold at Cannes for an anti-smoking campaign for the Cancer Patients Association, a triple grand prize at the London International Awards, India’s first Silver Pencil at The One Show Award in 2002, and Asia’s Creative Person of the Year at the Media Asia Award in 2002. He served as a jury member at several major festivals, including the Clio Awards in 2000 and as the first Asian jury president for outdoor, press, and film at the Cannes Lions in 2004. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Advertising Agencies Association of India in 2010, the Clio Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and was honored with the Padma Shri in 2016. In June 2018 he and his brother Prasoon were awarded the Lions Lifetime Achievement Award of St. Mark at Cannes. He was posthumously conferred the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2026.

Pandey was married twice; his second marriage, in December 2000, was to Nita Joshi, a former colleague at Ogilvy & Mather. His mother was Bhagwati Pandey, who died in December 2010. He is the elder brother of Prasoon Pandey, an ad films director, and has several sisters, including the singer and actress Ila Arun.
