Early life and background

Pooja Bedi was born on 11 May 1970 in Bombay (now Mumbai). She is the eldest child of actors Kabir Bedi and Protima Gauri Bedi. After her parents separated in the 1970s she attended Besant Montessori School in Mumbai and later The Lawrence School, Sanawar. Her given alternate name after marriage is Noorjahan.

Career

Pooja Bedi entered films in the early 1990s. Her first screen appearance was the lead role in the 1991 film Vishkanya. She gained wider recognition the following year for a supporting role in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, a performance that earned her a Filmfare nomination for best supporting actress. She continued to appear in supporting roles through the decade, including parts in Lootere (1993), Chittemma Mogudu and Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee (both 1993), and a guest appearance in Aatank Hi Aatank (1995).

Alongside her film work, Bedi became a visible television personality. She made her TV debut as a contestant on the dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in 2006. She later appeared on several reality formats: Nach Baliye 3 (2007) as a contestant and dance partner, hosted Bigg Boss season 2 in 2008, and took part in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi the same year. In 2011 she appeared on Maa Exchange with her daughter and then as a contestant on Bigg Boss season 5.

Married to Farhan Furniturewala in 1994, she converted to Islam before the wedding and took the name Noorjahan, though she continued to use her original name professionally. The couple had two children: daughter Alaya Ebrahim Furniturewala (born 28 November 1997) and son Omar Furniturewala (born 2000). Pooja and Farhan separated and their divorce was finalized on 14 February 2003. She has described maintaining a cordial, cooperative relationship with her ex-husband for the sake of their children.
