Pooja Rani Biography
Pooja Rani Bohra is an Indian middleweight boxer from Nimriwali, Bhiwani, Haryana. A national and international medalist across youth, state and senior‑dom
Early life and backgroundPooja Rani Bohra was born on 17 February 1991 in Nimriwali, Bhiwani, Haryana. Raised in a middle‑class family, she is the daughter of Rajbir Singh, a former sub‑inspector, and Damyanti Devi. She has two elder siblings, a brother Arvind Bohra and a sister Poonam Bohra. Pooja’s hometown remains Nimriwali and she grew up there before embarking on a boxing career.
Pooja developed an interest in boxing during her teenage years. She joined the Hawa Singh Boxing Academy in Bhiwani after about a year of deciding to pursue the sport. Early on she faced resistance at home and initially kept her training and the injuries she sustained hidden from her father. Her coach, Sanjay Kumar Sheoran, played an important role in supporting her and persuading her family to allow her to continue training.
Career
Pooja Rani competes in the middleweight division, in the 75 kg category. She made her international debut at the National Youth Boxing Championship in 2009 and her professional debut at the Asian Boxing Championship in 2012. Listed at approximately 173 cm (5'8") and around 75 kg (165 lbs), she fights under the guidance of coach Sanjay Kumar Sheoran.
Her medal record spans state, national and international competitions. At the state level she has multiple gold medals from youth and senior state championships across Haryana. Nationally she won titles including gold at the Federation Cup, All India Inter‑University, the 34th National Games and several Senior Women National Boxing Championships between 2009 and 2015. Internationally she earned medals at events including China Open tournaments, the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship (silver, 2012), the Arafura Games (silver, 2012), the 17th Asian Games (bronze, 2014), and other Asian and Nations Cup competitions. She won gold at the 12th South Asian Games in Shillong in 2016.
Pooja has faced setbacks through injury and defeats as well. She lost to Savannah Marshall at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and was eliminated in the first round of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship that same year. A burn sustained during Diwali required hand surgery in 2016 and kept her out of the ring for several months; she also suffered a shoulder injury that led to an additional long layoff. Despite these challenges, she returned to high‑level competition and in 2020 defeated Pornnipa Chutee in the Asia‑Oceania Olympic qualifiers to secure a place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first Indian to qualify in her event at that qualifier.
