Pooja Shukla was born and raised in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, in a middle-class Brahmin family. Sources list her year of birth variously as 1993 or 1996. She completed her graduate education at Lucknow University. Her father, Rakesh Shukla, works as a property dealer; her mother is a homemaker. She has a younger sister.

Career

Shukla first came to wider public attention in June 2017 when she and others displayed a black flag at the motorcade of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during an event at Lucknow University. Authorities arrested her after the incident and she remained in custody for about a month. Following her release, she met party leaders and emerged as a prominent student activist associated with the Samajwadi Students Federation.

She has continued to be active in street protests and student politics. In 2020 she was again arrested during demonstrations at Lucknow’s Bell Tower against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens. Through these episodes she developed a reputation as a firebrand youth leader and an outspoken critic of policies advanced by the state government.

In February 2022 Pooja Shukla formally joined the Samajwadi Party in the presence of party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The party named her its candidate for the Lucknow North assembly constituency in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. Her selection drew attention within local party circles and among observers of student politics; reports indicate she had already been campaigning in the constituency on behalf of the party before receiving the nomination.
