Poonam Azad Jha was born in 1968 and is an Indian national. She completed schooling up to the 12th grade and attended Patna Women’s College in Bihar in 1985. She is married to Kirti Azad, the former Indian cricketer who later entered politics. The couple have two children, Somya Vardhan and Surya Vardhan. Her father-in-law, Bhagwat Jha Azad, served as Chief Minister of Bihar in the 1990s.

Career

Poonam Azad has worked as a politician and social worker. Over the course of her public life she has been associated with multiple national and regional political parties. Early in her political career she contested the 2003 Delhi assembly election from the Gole Market constituency, facing then-Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

For many years she was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), serving as a party spokesperson in Delhi and remaining with the party for about 25 years until 2016. In November 2016 she left the BJP and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Five months later, in 2017, she moved to the Indian National Congress and was welcomed by the Delhi Congress leadership. In November 2021 she and her husband joined the All India Trinamool Congress and met the party’s national leader.
