Poonam Khemnar was born on 9 May 1994 in Ashwi Budruk, Maharashtra, and grew up in Ahmednagar. She completed her schooling at Ashwi English School And Jr. College and went on to graduate in physical education from Padmashri Vikhe Patil College of Arts, Science and Commerce under Pune University in Pravaranagar, Loni. She comes from a family headed by her parents, Nanasaheb and Suvarna Khemnar, and has an elder brother.

Career

Khemnar is a right-handed batter and bowls right-arm leg break. Standing about 1.78 m tall and weighing around 55 kg, she emerged as a prominent all-rounder in Maharashtra cricket. She has represented Maharashtra across domestic competitions, including Ranji Trophy matches and national tournaments, and has been described as one of the stronger all-round players from her state.

During her university years she played for Pune University, where she helped the team earn a silver medal in a West Zone event and competed in the All India Inter-University Tournament in the 2017–18 season. In the 2021–22 Women’s Senior One Day Trophy she appeared as a guest player for Nagaland and recorded the distinction of being the first player to score a century for the Nagaland team in a BCCI domestic competition.

Beyond state and university cricket, Khemnar has taken part in franchise competitions. She has been associated with Hp Supernova in the Warrior Women’s Premier League, where she has also served as captain in various seasons. In the inaugural 2023 Women’s Premier League auction she was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore at the base price of Rs. 10 lakh. Ahead of the 2024 season, she was bought by UP Warriorz for a fee of Rs. 10 lakh in the WPL auction held in Mumbai.
