Early life and background
Poonam Sinha was born Poonam Chandiramani on 3 November 1949 in Hyderabad. She comes from a Hindu Sindhi family and grew up in her hometown of Hyderabad. Her birth sign is Scorpio.

As a young woman she took part in beauty pageants and was crowned Miss Young India in 1968. That recognition preceded her move into the Hindi film world, where she adopted the screen name Komal for her acting work.

Career
Poonam made her film debut in 1969 with the movie Jigri Dost. She appeared in minor roles in a number of Hindi films thereafter. In addition to acting, she has produced two films: Prem Geet (1981) and Mera Dil Leke Dekho (2006).

Later in life Poonam transitioned into politics. In April 2019 she left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Samajwadi Party. Upon joining, she received a party ticket to contest an election in Lucknow.

Personal life
Poonam met actor Shatrughan Sinha in 1965 when both were travelling by train; they renewed contact later when both were active in film circles. After a long relationship that faced initial opposition from Poonam’s mother, the couple married on 9 July 1980.

Poonam and Shatrughan Sinha have three children: two sons, Luv Sinha and Kush Sinha, who have worked as actors, and a daughter, Sonakshi Sinha, who is also an actor.
