Popy Hazarika is an Indian weightlifter from Namti Salkathoni village in Sivasagar, Assam. Competing primarily in the under-59 kg categories, she rose from
Early life and backgroundPopy Hazarika was born on 8 December 1998 in Namti Salkathoni village, Sivasagar, Assam. She is the youngest of four sisters. Her mother, Dipti Hazarika, helped the family by working as a temporary cook at the village school and doing occasional work in rice fields. Popy lost her father when she was ten years old.
As a child in her village she competed in discus and javelin before trying weightlifting in 2013. Accompanied by a friend, she attended a local weightlifting camp at Swahid Peoli Phukan College, where she met coach Duljit Boruah and began formal training.
Career
Popy moved through regional and national training centres as her career progressed. After early coaching from Duljit Boruah she was selected by a talent-spotting programme and joined the SAI Training Centre in Golaghat, training under coach Om Prakash Kalyani. Later she trained at the national camp in Delhi, working with national-level coaches including Vijeta Sharma. Her coaches have noted her resilience and commitment as she adjusted her bodyweight and technique to fit higher categories.
She began weightlifting at a very light bodyweight and quickly progressed to lifting weights close to her own mass. Early on she practised long hours with limited equipment, often training after others because only a single set of gear served many youngsters. To ease financial strain while training at SAI Golaghat she and a friend shared basic supplies and travelled by train to save costs. During the COVID-19 pandemic one of her early coaches sent her home equipment to ensure she could keep training.
Popy has competed with success at district, state, national and international levels across categories that evolved as she gained strength. Highlights include gold medals at a district meet in 2014; at the Assam State Weightlifting competition in 2016 in the 48 kg class; and multiple medals in 2022 — at the Senior Nationals in Odisha (59 kg), at the Singapore Weightlifting International Competition (64 kg) and at the Khelo India Women Games in Nagrota (59 kg). In 2023 she won gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Greater Noida in the 59 kg category.
She has also collected a series of silver medals: at the 2018 Junior Nationals in Nagpur (59 kg); at Senior Nationals in Kolkata (2020) and Patiala (2021) in the 59 kg class; at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent (59 kg); and at the 36th National Games in Gujarat (2022) in the 59 kg division.
Popy set a national junior snatch record in the 59 kg category on 18 December 2018 by lifting 84 kg at the Junior Nationals in Nagpur. She followed that with a national senior snatch record in the 59 kg class on 4 February 2020, lifting 94 kg at the Senior Nationals in Kolkata. Internationally, she placed 17th in the 59 kg category at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent and finished 7th in the same category at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Her performances and leadership on the platform were recognised with a Sports Achiever award from the Northeast Frontier Railway zone in 2022. In 2021 she obtained a job with the Indian Railways and marked the occasion with a village celebration.
Public profile
Popy is unmarried and has described periods of struggle and doubt during her career. In 2018 she considered leaving weightlifting to pursue a more stable job with the Assam Police to support her family, but encouragement from friends and coaches convinced her to continue. She has cited training alongside established athletes — including Mirabai Chanu — as a motivating influence and has spoken about studying their technique.
Off the platform she likes dogs and keeps a pet. Her progress has been shaped by long hours of disciplined training, mentorship from multiple coaches, and practical support from family and friends.
Latest updates
Recent years have seen Popy expand into higher weight classes and add international medals to her record. In 2022 she collected multiple gold medals across national and international events and followed with a gold at the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Greater Noida. She continues to represent India in the 59 kg category and train under national-level coaches while balancing duties associated with her position in the Indian Railways.
