Prafulla Chaki Biography

Prafulla Chaki was born on 10 December 1888 in a village in Bogra district, then part of the Bengal Presidency of British India (now in Bangladesh). He was the fifth and youngest child in his family; his father was Rajnarayan Chaki and his mother was Swarnomoyee Devi.

Early life and background

Prafulla Chaki was born on 10 December 1888 in a village in Bogra district, then part of the Bengal Presidency of British India (now in Bangladesh). He was the fifth and youngest child in his family; his father was Rajnarayan Chaki and his mother was Swarnomoyee Devi. The family’s original surname was Bosu. Prafulla spent his childhood and schooling in the Rangpur area, attending Namuja Janada Prasad English School, Rangpur Zilla School and later Rangpur National School. While at Rangpur Zilla School he was expelled during his ninth-class year for involvement in student protests against colonial law. He then continued his studies at Rangpur National School alongside elder relatives.

Prafulla was described as an active and athletic youth who took part in wrestling and stick-fighting, and who enjoyed horse-riding and swimming. He came from a Hindu Kayastha family and held British Indian nationality.

Career

As a young man Prafulla Chaki joined the Jugantar group of revolutionaries, a secret organization that planned direct action against British officials and symbols of colonial power. After meeting leaders and organizers while in Rangpur, he traveled to Kolkata with Barindra Kumar Ghosh and became formally associated with the movement.

Within Jugantar, Prafulla was given assignments aimed at eliminating senior colonial officials. An initial plan to target Sir Joseph Bampfylde Fuller did not succeed. He was later selected, together with Khudiram Bose, for a mission to assassinate Mr. Douglas Kingsford, the district magistrate of Muzaffarpur, who had gained notoriety among political activists for harsh sentences and repressive measures.

On 30 April 1908 Prafulla and Khudiram attempted to carry out that plan. They stood near the European Club and threw bombs at a carriage they believed carried Kingsford. The carriage instead carried two English women related to a local lawyer, and both women were killed. The two revolutionaries fled the scene.

After the attack the two fled separately. Prafulla was sheltered by a railway employee who helped arrange travel for him. While traveling via train he was recognized by a police officer, Nandlal Banerjee. Facing imminent arrest at Mokama Ghat station on 1 May 1908, Prafulla Chaki shot himself and died. He was 19 years old at the time of his death. Khudiram Bose was captured and later executed.

Public profile

Prafulla Chaki’s actions and death became part of the larger public debate in India about the methods and aims of the independence movement. Prominent leaders and publications reacted strongly: some condemned violence as a path to freedom while others praised the courage of young revolutionaries and used the incident to criticize colonial authority. Bal Gangadhar Tilak published an article that defended the sentiment behind such resistance and faced sedition charges for his words.

After his death there were disputed accounts around the treatment of his remains. Reports stated that, because he had used an alias during missions, authorities initially had difficulty identifying him and that his head and body were handled by police and intelligence offices. Requests for modern verification of those remains were said to have been denied.

Family and personal details

Prafulla was unmarried at the time of his death. His immediate family included his elder brother Pratap Chandra Chaki. Decades later, members of his extended family continued to be identified in public reports; one grand-niece named Madhabi Taludar was mentioned in connection with her circumstances during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

Legacy

Prafulla Chaki is remembered as one of the young revolutionaries involved in early armed resistance against British rule. His life and death, occurring before his twentieth birthday, are part of the story of the Jugantar movement and of the broader struggles and controversies that characterized Indian nationalist politics in the first decades of the 20th century.
