Prakash Amte Biography
Prakash Amte is an Indian social worker and physician known for decades of community service at Hemalkasa and for founding Lok Biradari Prakalp and Animal
Early life and backgroundPrakash Baba Amte was born on 26 December 1948 in Anandawana, Chandrapur District, Maharashtra. He is the son of noted social worker Baba Amte and Sadhana Tai Amte. Raised in a family committed to service, Prakash trained as a medical doctor, earning an M.B.B.S. and later studying for an M.S. in general surgery at Government Medical College, Nagpur.
Career
Rather than completing his surgical studies, Prakash Amte chose to take up the social-work legacy of his father. He relocated to Hemalkasa, where he and his family became central figures in Lok Biradari Prakalp, an organization that runs a school, a hospital and an animal orphanage serving the Madia Gond community. For many years he and his family lived there in primitive conditions; he has carried out emergency medical procedures in situations without electricity.
Lok Biradari Prakalp’s hospital and school aim to meet local health and education needs, while the animal sanctuary, called Animal Ark, shelters wildlife whose parents were killed or otherwise lost. The Animal Ark grew out of a direct encounter in the forest when Prakash and his wife Mandakini intervened to protect an orphaned baby monkey; that animal, named Babli, became the first resident. Over time the facility came to care for many species including leopards, jackals, jungle cats, rhesus macaques, sloth bears, various antelope species, snakes, crocodiles and Indian pythons.
Prakash has combined clinical practice and community work with outreach to the local Adivasi population. He is known for practical acts such as repairing watches and radios for people in Hemalkasa and for building long-term relationships with the Madia Gond.
