Early life and background
Prakash Keshav Javadekar was born on 30 January 1951 in Pune, Maharashtra. He completed his schooling at District Council School in Mahad and graduated in commerce from Garware College of Commerce, Maharashtra Education Society, Pune. His father, Keshav Krishna Javadekar, worked as a journalist and his mother is Rajni Javadekar. Javadekar developed an early interest in public service and student politics; while studying in college he joined the student organisation All India Vidyarthi Parishad.

Career
Javadekar began his professional life with the Bank of Maharashtra, where he worked for about a decade before leaving in 1981 to become a full-time worker for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He formally joined the BJP in 1981 and went on to build a long political career at both the state and national levels.

At the state level, he served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1990 to 2002. During the mid-1990s he held leadership roles in state planning and technology initiatives, including a term as Executive Chairman of the State Planning Board of Maharashtra in 1995 and as Chairman of the Task Force on IT for the Maharashtra government from 1997 to 1999.

His national parliamentary career includes election to the Rajya Sabha in 2008. In the central government he held ministerial responsibilities spanning communications, education and environment portfolios. In 2014 he was appointed Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Information and Broadcasting and for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. In 2016 he took the oath as Minister of Human Resource Development. Ahead of a cabinet reshuffle in July 2021 he resigned from Narendra Modi’s Council of Ministers. In 2022 he was appointed to head the Rajya Sabha ethics committee.
