Early life and backgroundPramod Bhagat was born on 4 June 1988 in Hajipur, Vaishali district, Bihar. He grew up in a farming family; his parents are Kailash Bhagat and Kusum Devi. Pramod has a brother, Shekhar Bhagat, and two sisters, Chandan Devi and Kishuni Devi. He attended a local school in Noida and later studied at the Industrial Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, completing a B.Tech in electrical engineering.
As a child he enjoyed sport, but at the age of five he contracted polio which caused a permanent impairment to his left leg. Despite this setback and limited financial means during his early years, Pramod pursued athletics and developed a particular affinity for badminton, reportedly practising with a very modest second-hand racket.
Career
Pramod Bhagat is an Indian professional para-badminton player who competes for Team India. He made his international debut at the FESCPIC Games (now the Asian Para Games) in 2006 and later appeared on the world stage at the Para-Badminton World Championships in 2013. He plays left-handed and has competed in Paralympic Games, World Championships and Asian Para Games events in the SL3 classification.
Across his career he has collected multiple medals at the highest levels of para-badminton. Early international success came in 2013, when he won the world title in men’s doubles. He added further World Championship gold in men’s singles in 2015 and again in 2019, the latter edition in Basel where he won both singles and doubles titles. His continental results include medals at the Asian Para Games: bronze in 2014 and a gold in singles plus a silver in doubles at the 2018 edition in Indonesia.
