Early life and backgroundPramod Pathak was born on 23 December and grew up in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He spent eight years living in a hostel in Nainital, Uttarakhand while completing his formal education. After finishing school, he briefly tried to run his family business before moving to Mumbai in search of work.
In Mumbai Pathak found employment at a market research company in the Churchgate area of South Mumbai. While working there he regularly watched films and theatre productions, which helped shape his interest in acting. Coming from an orthodox Brahmin family, his parents were initially not supportive of his decision to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
Career
Pathak began his stage journey in 1996 when he joined a Mumbai-based theatre group. He left his day job to concentrate on acting full time and supplemented his income during his early years by writing screenplay dialogue, working backstage, handling sound operations and providing other technical support for theatre productions.
His on-screen career began with a small role in the film Thodisi Bewafaii (1980). Over the years he appeared in supporting parts in films such as The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002), Mumbai Cutting (2008) and Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010), in which he played a police S.P.
Pathak came to wider attention with his role as Sultana Daku in the two-part crime saga Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). Subsequent film credits include John Day (2013), CityLights (2014), Raees (2017) and Raazi (2019).
On television he made his debut in 2016 with the Star Plus drama P.O.W. Bandi Yuddh Ke in which he played Duggal. He entered the digital space in 2017 with the web series InMates, appearing as Janet's husband, and in 2018 gained further recognition for his portrayal of JP Yadav in the Amazon Prime series Mirzapur. In 2020 he was one of the leads in the show Raktanchal, playing the character Tripurari.
In addition to acting, Pathak has directed several short films, including Signalwaala Ladka (2009), Jaan (2012) and Woh Ladka (2013).
