Early life and background

Pranab Kumar Mukherjee was born on 11 December 1935 in Mirati in the Birbhum district of the Bengal Presidency, British India. He grew up in rural West Bengal and attended Kirnahar High School before continuing his studies at Suri Vidyasagar College and the University of Calcutta, where he completed an MA in political science and history and an LL.B. His father, Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee, was a freedom fighter and later served in the West Bengal Legislative Council.

Mukherjee’s early work life included teaching political science at Vidyanagar College and a stint as a clerk in the deputy accountant general’s office in Calcutta. He also worked as a journalist for a Bengali publication, experiences that preceded his full-time entry into national politics.

Career

Mukherjee entered national politics in 1969 after campaigning in a Lok Sabha by-election and being brought into the Indian National Congress. He began a long parliamentary career with multiple terms in the Rajya Sabha (1969, 1975, 1981, 1993 and 1999) and later won Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009. Over more than four decades he held many of India’s top ministries and played a central role in his party’s workings.

His ministerial responsibilities included serving as Union Deputy Minister of Industrial Development in the 1970s, multiple terms as Finance Minister, Commerce Minister, Defence Minister, and External Affairs Minister. He was also General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee and served as President of the West Bengal Congress. In the 2004 Lok Sabha, he was Leader of the House and thereafter chaired numerous Groups of Ministers and Empowered Groups of Ministers, becoming a key troubleshooter for the United Progressive Alliance governments.

Mukherjee’s administrative reach extended beyond ministries. He chaired the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata and served on the Planning Board of the Asiatic Society. In July 2012 he assumed the nation’s highest constitutional office as the 13th President of India and completed his presidential term in July 2017.

Public profile

Mukherjee was widely recognized for his institutional knowledge and his role as an influential second-in-command during coalition years. Colleagues and commentators often credited him with mentoring younger leaders and managing complex coalition dynamics. His long public life was also associated with a distinctive, home-grown style of English commonly noted in media and political circles.

He received several high honours over the years, including the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 and, later, the Bharat Ratna in 2019. Other international and regional awards included recognitions from Bangladesh and honours from foreign states.

Personal life

Pranab Mukherjee married Suvra Mukherjee in 1957. The couple had three children: two sons, Abhijit and Indrajit, and a daughter, Sharmistha, who is a Kathak dancer and has also been active in politics. His wife died in 2015. Pranab Mukherjee maintained an interest in reading, writing, gardening, music and long walks. He was known to enjoy non-vegetarian Bengali cuisine, with fish preparations among his favourites.

Mukherjee compiled a body of written work reflecting on political life and history. His books included titles on decades of Indian politics and collections of speeches, produced both before and after his presidential term.

Later years and death

After a long public career, Mukherjee retired from active politics in 2012 upon his election to the presidency. In August 2020 he was admitted to the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi for treatment that included brain surgery. He died there on 31 August 2020 at the age of 84 while undergoing treatment; complications included a lung infection, and he had earlier tested positive for COVID-19.
