Early life and background

Pranati Nayak was born on 6 April 1995 in Jhargam, West Bengal, and grew up in the Pingla area of the state. She is one of three daughters; her father, Sumanta Nayak, worked as a bus driver. Pranati has described early family life as modest, and her parents supported her pursuit of sport within their means.

Pranati first began practising the movements that would become gymnastics around the age of seven, initially mistaking training for yoga. She formalised her gymnastics training at about nine years old. To pursue higher-level coaching and training, she moved to Kolkata after finishing her basic schooling, following recommendations from her early mentors.

Career

Pranati competes in women’s artistic gymnastics at the Senior International Elite level. She has trained under coaches including Minara Begum and national coach Lakhan Sharma. Minara Begum has been credited with supporting Pranati’s day-to-day needs early in her career, covering living and food expenses so Pranati could focus on training.

Pranati won a bronze medal in vault at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Ulaanbaatar in 2019. She has been recognised among India’s notable vaulters, joining the ranks of other Indian gymnasts who have won international medals on that apparatus.

Her international résumé also includes participation at the 2014 Asian Games, where she advanced to All-Around finals and placed on individual apparatus standings. Pranati was India’s second gymnast to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021), earning a continental quota spot after the Asian Championships were cancelled.

Pranati represented India at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, qualifying for finals in both the women’s vault and the all-around competition. In the vault semifinal she placed sixth with a score of 12.716 to secure a place among the top eight finalists. In the all-around qualification she was 23rd overall but progressed to the final because of the two-per-country rule.

Alongside her competitive career, Pranati is employed by Indian Railways, a position she obtained through a sports quota following her Asian Championships medal performance. She has described intensive and continuous training through interruptions such as the COVID-19 lockdown, when she continued to practice using improvised equipment and remote guidance from coaches.
