Early life and backgroundPrannoy Haseena Sunil Kumar was born on 17 July 1992 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He grew up in the same city and is the son of Sunil Kumar, who served in the Air Force, and Haseena Kumar. Prannoy began playing badminton around the age of 10 and received his initial training from his father, who had been an All India Air Force badminton champion.
Prannoy's early pathway to professional coaching was not straightforward. Several coaches who assessed him during trials considered his movement and speed to be limited and suggested he should switch to doubles. Despite that skepticism, he continued to develop as a singles player and benefited from support through the GoSports Foundation scholarship programme from 2011.
Career
Prannoy established himself on the international junior stage by earning a silver medal in boys' singles at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. The following year he took another silver at the 2011 Bahrain International Challenge. After a difficult 2011–2012 spell that kept him out of action due to injuries, he rebounded on the senior circuit.
Domestically, he won two All India Senior National Ranking Championships in 2014. Internationally, he captured titles at the 2014 Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold and the 2016 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold. On 10 September 2015 he reached a career-high world ranking of number 12.
Prannoy has also produced notable match results against top opponents. At the 2017 Indonesian Open he recorded consecutive wins over two leading players of that era, beating Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long in successive matches. In franchise badminton, he represented the Mumbai Rockets in the 2017 edition of the Premier Badminton League.
In May 2022 Prannoy was a member of the Indian men's team that won the Thomas Cup for the first time in the country's history. India defeated the defending champions Indonesia in the final on 15 May 2022, a milestone team achievement in which Prannoy participated.
