Early life and backgroundPrasad Oak was born on 17 February 1975 in Pune, Maharashtra. Raised in a Maharashtrian Hindu family, he attended Bhave High School in Pune and went on to study at Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce. Oak has said that his ambition was always to direct films, and he moved to Mumbai in the mid-1990s to pursue that goal.
Career
Oak began his career in theatre, working as an assistant director on the Marathi play Premachi Goshta in 1996. Over the following years he contributed to a broad range of Marathi stage productions, including titles such as Adhantar, Nandee, Magna Talyakathi, Ranangan, Abhas and Altan Paltan. His stage work provided a foundation for a multi-faceted career that later expanded into television and cinema.
On screen, Oak made his film debut in 2005 with Zeher. His television debut came in 2009 with the series Bandini. In addition to acting, he has directed films in multiple languages; his first directorial project on film was Hay Kay Nay Kay (Tamil) in 2009. He has said that directing was his primary ambition and that it took time for that part of his career to develop: after coming to Mumbai in 1996 he directed his first film in 2009 and followed with further directorial work in later years.
Oak has worked extensively as a performer, with credits that include more than 80 television serials and 39 films. He has also contributed as a playback singer to Marathi films such as Doghat Tisr Ata Sagal Vista (2008) and Joshi Ki Kamble (2008). Beyond acting and directing, his career encompasses writing, producing, anchoring and poetry.
Recognition and awards
Oak’s work as a director drew national recognition when his 2017 Marathi drama Kaccha Limbu received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi. The same film also earned him Filmfare honours in 2018 for Best Actor and Best Film in the Marathi category. In 2022 he was awarded the 4th Majja Digital Award for Outstanding Actor in a Negative Role for the movie Dhurala.
