Early life and background

Prashant Damle was born on 5 April 1961 in Mumbai, where he grew up and received his schooling at Raja Shivaji Vidyalaya. He later attended the University of Mumbai. Damle became involved with stage acting as a teenager and launched his performing career at 17, taking early roles while still in school and college.

Career

Damle established himself primarily as a theatre actor in the Marathi stage tradition. His first theatrical appearance came in the play Tur Tur, and he went on to perform in widely seen productions such as Gela Madhav Kunikade, Lekure Udand Jhali, Priyatama, Eka Lagnachi Pudhchi Goshta, Amhi Doghe Raja Rani and Olakh Na Palakh. He has been credited with popularising several long-running commercial plays and remains closely associated with the Marathi stage.

His screen debut on film came in Pudhcha Paau (1986), in which he played the character Ramu; earlier screen credits include Atmavishwas (1989) and a supporting role in the 1993 comedy-drama Savat Mazi Ladki. Over the years Damle has appeared in around 40 Marathi feature films, including Ek Ratra Mantarleli (1989), Aayatya Gharat Gharoba (1991), Char Divas Sasuche (1993), Chal Gammat Karu (1994), Gola Berij (2012) and the 2018 Marathi film Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai 3. On television he has worked in serials and comedy shows such as Bhikaji Rao Crorepati, Ek Rupayachi Paij, Be Dune Paach and Kay Pahilas Majhyat, and he led the title role in the Sony SAB sitcom Chandrakant Chiplunkar Seedi Bambawala. More recently he appeared in the web series Eka Kaleche Mani (2023) on Jio Cinema.

Across stage and screen Damle has received numerous awards for acting. His accolades include multiple Best Actor awards from Maharashtra State Awards, Natya Nirmata Sangh, Akhil Bhartiya Natya Parishad and critics’ groups for plays such as Gela Madhav Kunikade, Lekure Udand Jhali, Eka Lagnachi Pudhchi Goshta and Amhi Doghe Raja Rani. He has also been honoured with the Dinanath Mangeshkar Award and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Damle’s stage endurance and productivity have been recognised with several Limca Book records for staging hundreds of shows in single years and performing multiple productions in a single day. In 2013 his play Gela Madhav Konikade reached its 10,700th performance and that milestone was noted by Guinness World Records. In November 2022 he marked his 12,500th theatre performance with Eka Lagnachi Pudhchi Goshta at a performance in Mumbai.

Damle is widely regarded as one of the most experienced figures in Marathi theatre. He founded the Theatre School of Performing Arts in Pune in 2012 and established the Prashanth Fan Foundation for social welfare projects. He has supported his professional collaborators, including providing financial assistance to theatre crew members during the COVID-19 pandemic. Damle has also served as brand ambassador for organisations such as Disha Direct, Shamrao Vithal Co-operative Bank Ltd. and the Retired Army Association.

Prashant Damle is married to Gauri Prashant Damle. The couple have two daughters, Chandana Damle Joshi and Kankana Damle Dsouza. Damle’s hometown and primary base remain Mumbai. He is a noted fan of spicy foods such as pav bhaji and vada pav.

Health

In May 2013 Damle suffered a mild heart attack while rehearsing for Eka Lagnachi Pudhchi Goshta and received emergency treatment. Medical evaluation revealed arterial blockages that were subsequently treated surgically.
