Early life and background

Prashant Gade was born in 1995 in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. He grew up in Khandwa and attended St. Pius School there. His upbringing included an early, formative encounter with questions about loss and material attachment that influenced his later focus on social impact.

Gade enrolled in electronic engineering at college but left during his third year. After leaving engineering he moved to Pune where he took a job earning a modest monthly wage while pursuing additional technical training, including a FAB training course in Pune and a distance course in robotics. He also spent time at institutions such as FAB Lab as a research fellow.

Career

While still a student he started Curiosity Lab, an initiative to help engineering students develop projects. His interest in assistive technology grew after learning about international makers of bionic limbs and meeting people affected by limb difference. A meeting with a seven-year-old girl born without limbs, and the high cost he discovered for prosthetic devices, motivated him to pursue low-cost prosthetic solutions for people who could not afford expensive commercial options.

Gade founded Innovating New Abilities, commonly known as the INALI Foundation, in 2016. He named the organisation after his girlfriend, Inali Wahane. INALI’s work centers on designing and producing affordable electronic prosthetic arms. The foundation obtained early support from the Technical Secretary of the Jaipur Foot Foundation, which provided a seed grant to help design initial devices. Additional help came from an overseas retired professor who donated ten machines to assist production.

Through INALI, Gade and his team have designed and distributed hundreds of prosthetic arms. The organisation has provided over 700 arms free to people in need and sold more than 300 to those who could afford to pay a nominal cost. INALI’s stated mission includes travelling to remote villages across India to conduct free distribution camps for electronic arms, and sustaining the programme by offering low-cost devices to paying customers.
