Prashant Kishor Biography
Prashant Kishor is an Indian political strategist turned politician from Bihar. Known for running campaign teams for multiple major parties and for forming
Early life and backgroundPrashant Kishor was born in 1978 in Koran village, Rohtas district, Bihar, and grew up in a government school in the state. He later attended Patna Science College. His hometown is listed as Buxar, Bihar. He is Indian by nationality and comes from a Brahmin family.
Career
Kishor began his professional life in public health, spending about eight years with the United Nations in the United States before moving into election strategy. He has been a prominent political strategist and tactician, working across party lines for a variety of state and national campaigns.
In 2011 he undertook his first political campaign and, in the years that followed, formed a campaign group called Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG). CAG was active in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, after which Kishor declined an offer to join the PMO as a minister of state. The group was later renamed the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) and continued to run election and public engagement campaigns.
Kishor’s portfolio of campaign work spans many major parties and contests. He was involved with the BJP’s 2014 effort through CAG and later worked for Nitish Kumar and Janata Dal (United) in the 2015 Bihar assembly elections; following that campaign he served as an advisor to Nitish Kumar. He also worked on campaigns for the Congress in Punjab for the 2017 elections, where his work was credited by some as contributing to the party’s victory, and for the Congress in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, a contest that ended in a large defeat for the party.
In 2017 and afterward, Kishor worked with other regional parties as well, serving as political advisor to the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party for the 2019 Andhra Pradesh elections and as strategist for the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi’s 2020 legislative election, where AAP won a large majority. In early 2020 he was appointed as a strategist by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for the Tamil Nadu assembly polls.
Kishor has repeatedly described pauses and changes in his own role: in 2020 he said he would not campaign for any party and initiated a public-awareness tour in Bihar called Baat Bihar Ki. In 2021 he announced a resignation from active political-strategist work and indicated a desire to step back from the space, though he remained available to work with parties on occasion.
Party politics and his own party
On 16 September 2018 Kishor joined Janata Dal (United) as a vice president. He was later expelled from JD(U) on 29 January 2020 following statements he made about the party’s chief minister. In 2022 he declined an offer from Congress to join an Empowered Action Group for the 2024 general election, saying the party needed broader leadership and reforms rather than his individual involvement.
On 2 October 2024 Kishor launched his own political party, Jan Suraaj Party, and set out a five-point agenda for the Bihar elections. He named retired diplomat Manoj Bharti as the party’s first working president.
Public profile
Prashant Kishor is commonly known by the nickname PK and is recognized for his ability to design campaign formats and public-engagement events. He has worked with leaders across the political spectrum, including projects associated with Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar, Mamata Banerjee, Amarinder Singh and Arvind Kejriwal at various times in his career.
His career has drawn controversy at moments. Questions have been raised when he worked for multiple parties in overlapping timeframes, and audio and public exchanges have at times provoked debate about his public statements. In December 2024 an FIR was lodged related to his role in protests by BPSC aspirants; he was later arrested in January 2025 after a period of fasting and public protest when authorities moved to produce him before the Patna High Court.
Personal life
Kishor is married to Jahnavi Das, who is a doctor. The couple has a son named Daibik. His father is Shrikanth Pande, who is also a doctor. Physically, his height is listed at approximately 175 cm (about 5'9"), with black hair and black eyes.
Latest updates
In October 2024 Kishor founded the Jan Suraaj Party and announced his party’s leadership structure and electoral agenda for Bihar. Earlier developments through late 2024 and into January 2025 included public activism around Bihar public service exam grievances that led to legal action and his arrest for production before the Patna High Court.
