Early life and background

Prashanth Kumar Rai was born on 4 April 1984 in the village of Olamogaru in the Puttur district of Karnataka. Raised in the same town that he lists as his hometown, he completed his graduation at St. Philomena College in Puttur. From a young age he was involved in kabaddi, representing his college team in competitions that yielded national-level successes across multiple years.

Career

Rai emerged into wider public view when he took part as a raider in the very first season of the Pro Kabaddi League in 2014. He has built a long-running career in the PKL, wearing jersey number 14 and playing for multiple franchises across different seasons. In the opening three seasons he was a member of the Telugu Titans, serving largely as a backup to senior raiders while contributing when called upon. During Season 2 he scored 54 points in 15 matches for the Titans.

He moved to Dabang Delhi for Season 4 and then joined Haryana Steelers in Season 5, where his performances helped the team reach the playoffs. In Season 6 (2018) the U.P. Yoddha secured him at an auction bid of Rs. 79 lakhs — the highest bid of his PKL career and the largest for a category B player in that season’s auction. That season he collected 147 points across 21 matches, registering over 100 raid points in a single campaign.

Rai returned to Haryana Steelers for Season 7 in 2019, where he continued to be noted for an aggressive raiding style. In Season 8 (2022) he represented Patna Pirates, and subsequently joined the Gujarat Giants for Seasons 9 and 10. Beyond the PKL, he has appeared for other teams as well, including representing the Karnataka State Police team at the South India Men’s Kabaddi championships in 2006, and playing for the Bank of Baroda side at a South India tournament held in Chettikulam, Tirunelveli district in May 2022.
