Pratap Chandra Sarangi Biography
Pratap Chandra Sarangi is an Indian politician and social worker from Odisha. A long-time member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he has served as a Memberof
Early life and backgroundPratap Chandra Sarangi was born on 4 January 1955 in Gopinathpur village, Nilagiri, in the Balasore district of Odisha. He completed his schooling at K.C. High School in Nilagiri and earned a B.A. from Fakir Mohan College, Balasore in 1975. Raised in a family headed by his father Gobinda Chandra Sarangi, Sarangi comes from the Utkala Brahmin community and follows Hinduism.
From an early age he was drawn to spiritual life and spent time at Belur Math considering monastic life with the Ramakrishna Order. When advised that he should remain to care for his mother, he instead continued a life of public service and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which shaped his approach to community work and grassroots organisation.
Career
Sarangi’s public life has been rooted in local social work and politics. In the 1980s he established Ekal Vidyalayas—single-teacher village schools—to expand education access in his area. He became active in Hindu nationalist organisations and served as state president of the Bajrang Dal.
His electoral career began with a successful run in the 2004 Odisha Legislative Assembly elections, when he won the Nilagiri assembly seat on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. He retained a legislative role after being re-elected in 2009. In 2014 he contested the Lok Sabha elections but was defeated by a Biju Janata Dal candidate.
In the 2019 general election Sarangi returned to the national stage as the BJP candidate for the Balasore Lok Sabha constituency and won his seat by a margin of more than 12,000 votes. On 31 May 2019 he was sworn in as a Minister of State in the Union government, taking responsibility for the portfolios of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. As MoS for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises he worked under the senior minister Nitin Gadkari.
Public profile
Sarangi is known for a deliberately simple personal style. He has lived modestly for much of his life, has been described as living in a hut and travelling by bicycle, and during the 2019 campaign he travelled by auto-rickshaw rather than in luxury vehicles. He is often called "Nana" in his home region and is regarded locally as a community-minded elder who maintains close ties with villagers.
He has spoken about continuing the lifestyle he practised before entering Parliament and framed himself as a foot soldier of Narendra Modi, crediting the prime minister’s qualities with contributing to his political success. Within his constituency he has expressed a wish to develop Balasore as a tourist destination to support local welfare and economic opportunity.
Controversies
Sarangi’s public activities have included periods of legal scrutiny tied to his role in Hindu right-wing organisations. He was state president of the Bajrang Dal at the time of high-profile communal incidents in Odisha in 1999 and later faced accusations related to those events; courts did not find sufficient evidence to convict him in relation to that case. In 2002 he was arrested in connection with attacks on the Odisha State Assembly during protests by Hindu right-wing groups; those events are part of the historical record of his activism.
Personal life
Sarangi is unmarried and has no children. He is a vegetarian and lists reading biographies among his interests. Physical details recorded in public sources note a height of about 165 cm and a weight of approximately 60 kg. His registered residence is in Gopinathpur village, Nilgiri, Balasore, Odisha.
Latest updates
Following the 2019 election victory he assumed ministerial office on 31 May 2019. He continued in the government as Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, and for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, emphasising that his way of life and dedication to public service would remain unchanged after taking office.
