Early life and background

Prathyusha Garimella was born on 3 May 1986 in Hyderabad, Telangana. She completed higher studies in the United Kingdom, earning a master’s degree in 2009, and later returned to India. Her father, Krishna Rao, was a retired Indian Revenue Service officer.

Career

After finishing her education in the UK, Prathyusha initially joined her family’s LED manufacturing business. She later pursued her interest in fashion, opening a boutique under her own name in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, in 2013. Over the course of her career she designed for a number of well-known personalities across film, sports and society.

Her clients included actors and public figures such as Kajal Aggarwal, Parineeti Chopra, Raveena Tandon, Rakul Preet Singh, Shruti Haasan and tennis player Sania Mirza. In 2016, actress Trisha Krishnan wore a gown by Prathyusha at a film promotion, an example of her work being chosen for public events.

In 2019 she expanded her creative range with a capsule collection called Keya, which incorporated menswear alongside a few womenswear pieces. She explained that the Keya capsule favored neutral tones and was intended to offer quieter, thoughtfully tailored menswear options rather than loud, showy pieces. The collection’s name was inspired by her niece.

Prathyusha continued to dress clients for important moments; in 2020 Miheeka Bajaj wore one of her lehengas for a pre-wedding function.

Public profile

Prathyusha’s designs were covered in newspapers and magazine features during her career, and her boutique in Hyderabad became recognized for its custom work for celebrities. Personal life and death

Prathyusha was unmarried. On 11 June 2022 she was found dead at her boutique in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. She was 36 years old at the time of her death. Authorities reported the cause of death as suicide by inhalation of carbon monoxide. A note found at the scene was reported to express that she felt unable to continue and apologised to her parents and friends. Her father discovered her at the boutique and took the body to Osmania Hospital for medical inspection.

News of her death prompted condolences from friends and peers. Among those who publicly expressed grief was Upasana Konidela, who described Prathyusha as a close friend and mourned her passing.
