Praveen Chithravel Biography

Indian triple jumper Praveen Chithravel rose from a small town in Tamil Nadu to international podiums. A 2001-born athlete, he trains at the Inspire Instit

Early life and background

Praveen Chithravel was born on 5 June 2001 in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. Raised in a family with modest means, his father Krishna worked as a daily wage farm labourer and his mother Prema is a homemaker. He attended Balakrishna Matric Higher Secondary School in Tirunelveli and later completed a Bachelor of Arts. A younger brother, Velpriyan Chithravel, is also an athlete; Praveen has an elder sister as well.

Praveen’s first exposure to structured athletics came while he was still at school. A science teacher and later coach Indira Suresh played an early role in his development, spotting him in seventh grade and guiding his training through the Centre of Excellence for Boys in Chennai and later in Nagercoil. Over time he moved to more advanced training environments, including the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) in Vijayanagara, where he lives, trains and receives financial support.

Career

Specializing in the triple jump, Praveen began collecting national-level medals as a teenager. He earned gold at the Khelo India School Games in New Delhi in 2018 and took bronze at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires — becoming one of the early Indian athletes to medal at that competition. That same year he won silver at the National Junior Championships in Coimbatore.

Over the following years Praveen’s domestic medal haul expanded with victories at multiple national championships and inter-state meets, including the Federation Cup, the National Open Athletics Championships, the Indian National Games and the Indian Championships. He also won the Indian Open Jumps Competition at the Inspire Institute of Sport.

On the continental and global stage, Praveen has claimed medals and solid finishes. He won bronze in the triple jump at the 2022 Asian Games with a 16.68 m effort and finished fourth at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a 16.89 m best. In indoor competition he took silver at the 2023 Asian Indoor Championships and set a national indoor record with a 16.98 m jump. He also placed sixth at his first Diamond League appearance in Monaco in 2023.

Praveen’s season highlights in 2023 included a national-record 17.37 m triple jump at the Prueba de Confrontación meet in Cuba, a performance that qualified him for the World Athletics Championships and contributed to securing an Olympic quota for Paris 2024 via world ranking. He has also been hampered by injury: a hamstring problem in 2023 forced a near-month-long break and the withdrawal from the Florence Diamond League.

Throughout his progression he has worked with several coaches. Early mentorship came from Indira Suresh, and later guidance included training under Antony Yaich at IIS and technical input from Yoandri Betanzos, a former elite triple jumper and two-time world championships silver medallist.

Public profile

Praveen is known for a strong work ethic and a focus on fitness; he trains regularly at the IIS gym and often shares glimpses of his workouts on social media. He lists Christian Taylor, Carl Lewis and fellow Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra among those who inspire him. Off the field, he enjoys swimming, travelling and photography. Food is a notable interest: before becoming a professional he struggled to maintain a disciplined diet, and although he misses spicier seafood and biryani, he follows the more measured nutrition plan provided at IIS.

Praveen dislikes cold weather and names actor Kamal Haasan as a favourite. He remains unmarried and follows Hinduism.

Latest updates

In 2023 Praveen set the national triple jump record with a 17.37 m mark and broke the meet record at the Indian Open Jumps Competition with a 17.17 m effort. He earned a quota place toward the Paris 2024 Olympics through his world ranking. As of 2023 he was ranked 14th in the world in the men’s triple jump category and 446th in men’s overall world rankings. He continues to train at the Inspire Institute of Sport with support from the institute.
