Praveen Nath Biography
Early life and background Praveen Nath was born in Karingulam, Nemmara in the Palakkad district of Kerala.
Early life and backgroundPraveen Nath was born in Karingulam, Nemmara in the Palakkad district of Kerala. Sources list his date of birth as either 30 May 1997 or 30 May 1998. He grew up in a family that experienced financial hardship after his father, Prabhakaran, died when Praveen was young. His mother, Valsala, supported the family as a daily-wage earner and raised Praveen and his brothers, Pushpan, Vineeth and the late Anoop.
Praveen attended Yogini Matha Girls High School in Kollengode and later enrolled at NSS College Nemmara. He also spent time studying at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, under a government provision for transgender students. He completed some college coursework but did not finish his degrees due to financial difficulties and other pressures. He held Bachelor of Arts study records in history and in English from his academic history entries.
In interviews he described first recognizing a different gender identity during tenth grade. Coming out as a trans man created family tension; he was taken to priests and admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru for a period. Over time, relationships within his family changed. He left home at about 20 to live with transgender communities in Kerala and later reconciled with family members.
Career
Praveen trained in fitness and bodybuilding beginning around 2020. He worked with trainer Vinu Mohan, who helped create an open competition category for transgender athletes with local bodybuilding associations. Praveen rose to prominence in Kerala after winning titles in 2021, including Mr Thrissur (trans man open category) and a Mr Kerala competition in the trans man open category. He was a finalist at the 2022 International Health, Sports & Fitness Festival (IHFF) in Mumbai.
Alongside his sporting pursuits, Praveen worked with Sahayathrika, an organization that advocates for sexual minorities in Kerala. From 2021 until his death in 2023 he served as an advocacy coordinator, organizing awareness sessions across the state and promoting acceptance of transgender people.
Public profile
Praveen became widely recognized as Kerala’s first trans man bodybuilder, and his victories and public work made him a visible figure for transgender rights and representation in the region. He also worked briefly at a local Akshaya centre in his hometown in 2020. His advocacy included public appearances and participation in community events; he was photographed and felicitated alongside other transgender activists by state officials.
Personal life
Praveen identified as a trans man and underwent gender-affirming surgery in 2018. He was closely attached to his mother and credited her presence during his medical procedures. He had tattoos including the word Amma on his left chest and additional ink on his left arm.
In November 2022 he met model Rishana Ayshu at a Sahayathrika event. The two began dating that month, and they married on 14 February 2023 in a wedding supported by benefactors and members of the transgender community. Rishana had a background in pageants, including winning Miss Malabar. In early May 2023 Praveen posted and then deleted a message on social media indicating a separation; he later clarified in an interview that the post had been made during an emotionally difficult moment and that he and his wife were working through ordinary relationship problems.
Death and aftermath
On 4 May 2023, Praveen was found at home after ingesting poison and was taken to the Government Medical College, Thrissur, where he was later pronounced dead. He was 25 or 26 at the time, based on the differing birth-year records. Following his death, his wife made public statements criticizing online harassment; she later attempted to harm herself and was hospitalized. Family members raised allegations of physical harm and indicated they intended to pursue legal action.
