Early life and backgroundPritam Chakraborty was born on 14 June 1971 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He completed his schooling at St. James' School in Kolkata and earned a bachelor’s degree in Geology from Presidency College. After beginning a master’s program in science, he left it to follow a musical path and enrolled in a course in Sound Recording and Engineering at the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.
Pritam grew up in a household where music was present: his father, though employed as an insurance officer, also taught music to children. That early exposure helped shape Pritam’s interest in composition and performance. During his FTII years he had the chance to compose background music for a film by Hungarian director Istvan Gaal, an experience that contributed to his development as a composer.
Career
After participating as a lead guitarist with several bands in Bengal — including Chandrabindoo and Jotugriher Pakhi, which released a cassette — Pritam moved to Mumbai in 1997 to pursue broader opportunities. He quickly found work composing advertising jingles for national brands such as Santro, Emami, Thums Up, McDonald’s and Complan, and began writing title tracks for prime-time television shows including Ye Meri Life Hai, Kkavyanjali, Astitva and Remix.
Early in his film career Pritam worked in partnership with composer Jeet Ganguly; the duo scored three films together before parting ways. Pritam’s first major solo success came with the soundtrack for Dhoom (2004), which brought him widespread recognition.
Over the years he built a substantial body of work in film music and also served as a mentor on singing reality shows such as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Chhote Ustaad and X-Factor. By the time he composed the music for Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara, he had reached the milestone of being the music director on his 100th Bollywood film.
