Early life and background

Prithvi Pankaj Shaw was born on 9 November 1999 in Virar, Maharashtra, and is of Indian nationality. He grew up in a family with roots in Manpur, Gaya, Bihar. His father is Pankaj Shaw; his mother died when he was very young. Shaw attended A.V.S. Vidyamandir in Virar and Rizvi Springfield High School in Mumbai, and later enrolled at Rizvi College of Arts, Science & Commerce.

From an early age Shaw focused intensively on cricket. He began playing at about three years old and put in long hours of practice that included frequent travel between Virar and Mumbai. His father played a central support role in those early years, including acting as a practice bowler and making sacrifices to back his son’s cricketing development.

Career

Shaw first captured widespread attention as a schoolboy when he scored 546 runs off 330 balls in a Harris Shield match for Rizvi Springfield. That innings became a defining moment in his early career and helped establish him as one of India’s most promising young batsmen.

He progressed through youth pathways into representative cricket, including selection for the Polly Umrigar XI in 2011 and later leadership of India’s Under-19 side. As captain, Shaw led India to victory in the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

On the domestic front, Shaw has played for Mumbai and represented Northamptonshire in English county cricket. Among his other achievements are becoming one of the youngest Indian batters to score a Test century (18 years and 329 days) and being the 15th Indian to score a century on Test debut. He was also named the Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai’s Best Junior Cricketer of the Year in 2017.
