Early life and backgroundPriti Sapru was born on 24 December 1962 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a family connected to the film industry, she attended St. Joseph's High School in Juhu. Her father was the actor D.K. Sapru and her mother worked as a film producer. She comes from a Kashmiri Pandit background and grew up in a household with close ties to cinema. Her older brother Tej Sapru is an actor and her sister Reema Rakesh Nath works as a writer and director.
Career
Priti Sapru entered the film world as a child artist. Her earliest credited appearances include the Hindi child-artist role in Habari (1979) and a Punjabi child role in Sarpanch (1982). She moved on to work in both Hindi and Punjabi films, taking on supporting parts in several Bollywood productions before becoming especially prominent in Punjabi cinema.
In Punjabi films she earned leading roles in commercially successful projects such as Nimmo, Yaari Jatt Di and Diva Bale Sari Raat. Beyond acting, Sapru expanded into writing, producing and directing. She wrote the script for the Hindi film Zameen Aasman, and in 1990 she wrote, produced and directed the Punjabi movie Qurbani Jatt Di.
Over the years she has shared screen space or credits with well-known film personalities including Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Raj Babbar, Gurdas Maan and Amitabh Bachchan. Even after turning fifty she continued to portray notable character roles across both film industries. After a hiatus from screen work she returned to Punjabi cinema with the 2019 film Kaake Da Viyah.

Priti Sapru married architect Upvan Ahluwalia on 10 July 2008. The couple have twin daughters born in 2009, Riya Walia and Rene Walia. Her extended family includes a connection by marriage to the actress Rekha: Dhanalakshmi Sapru, married to Priti’s brother Tej Sapru, is Rekha’s younger sister. The family has also been linked with Arun Jaitley and his wife Sangeeta Arun Jaitley.
