Early life and background

Priya Tendulkar was born on 19 October 1954 in Bombay. Daughter of writer Vijay Tendulkar and Nirmala Tendulkar, she grew up in a family connected to the arts. She completed a degree in political science and also held a diploma in painting. Her interests included cooking, sketching and painting.

Career

Tendulkar’s stage career began in 1969 when she appeared in the theatre play Haya Vadan. She made her film debut with Ankur in 1974 and went on to act in a variety of films across several decades, including titles released in the 1980s and 1990s. Her screen work included films such as Minchina Ota (1980), Nasoor (1985), Besahara (1987), Mohra (1994), Trimurti (1995) and Gupt (1997).

On television she became widely known for playing the lead part in Rajani (1985), a role that brought her national recognition. She also appeared in serials such as Yug (1996), Itihaas (1996), Hum Paanch (1995) and Professor Pyarelal (1999). Beyond acting, Tendulkar hosted talk shows including the Priya Tendulkar Talk Show and Zimmedar Kaun, and she featured in television commercials. Her professional life encompassed acting, social activism and writing; she received multiple awards at the state level in Maharashtra and Gujarat and earned recognition for her books.

Before establishing herself as an actress, Tendulkar worked in a range of roles including hotel receptionist, air hostess, part-time model and newsreader. Priya Tendulkar married actor Karan Razdan in 1998; the marriage ended in divorce after seven years. She did not have children. Her siblings included Raja Tendulkar, a cinematographer, and sisters Tanuja Mohite and Sushma Tendulkar.

Illness and death

Tendulkar had been battling breast cancer and died of a heart attack on 19 September 2002 at her residence in Prabhadevi, Mumbai. She was 47 years old at the time of her death. Her passing prompted public condolences, including from then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
