Early life and background

Priyadarshini Patil was born on 14 October 1980 in Saptapur, Dharwad, Karnataka, India. She grew up in Dharwad and completed an engineering education, qualifying as an IT engineer.

Career

After finishing her engineering degree, Patil relocated with her husband to Sydney, Australia, where they settled on Verlie Street. In Australia she worked for an information technology firm.

Personal life and family

Patil was married to Lingaraj Patil. The couple had two children: a son, Amartya, and a daughter, Aparajita. The family lived in Sydney for several years while the children were raised there. Her son Amartya was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age ten and received treatment at Westmead Children’s Public Hospital in Sydney, which included periodic injections.

Legal and custodial matters

Beginning in 2019 Patil pursued a medical negligence complaint related to her son’s care and requested admission to a private hospital. That matter led to involvement by the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice, which later filed a case alleging the children had not been properly cared for. Following those proceedings the authorities took custody of both children.

In response to the loss of custody, Patil launched an online petition seeking to regain her children and sought assistance from the Indian Consulate in Sydney in late July 2023. These efforts did not succeed in returning the children to her care.

Death

In August 2023 Patil traveled from Australia to India and arrived in Belagavi, Karnataka. She sent belongings to her parents’ home in Dharwad. On 20 August 2023 her body was found in the Naviluteertha dam in the backwaters of the Malaprabha River near Saundatti, Belagavi. She was 42 years old at the time of her death. Relatives reported that a note was received in which she expressed an intention to end her life and accused Australian authorities and neighbours of harassment; the reported cause of death was suicide by drowning.
