Priyanka Goswami Biography

Indian race walker Priyanka Goswami is a national record holder in the 20 km race walk and a Commonwealth Games silver medallist. Born in Muzaffarnagar, UP

Early life and background
Priyanka Goswami was born on 10 March 1996 in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in Sagdi Village. She attended Kanohar Lal Girls School and later studied at B K Maheshwari Inter-college in Meerut, completing an arts degree. Her family includes her father Madanpal Goswami, a bus conductor, her mother Anita Goswami, and a younger brother, Kapil Goswami.

As a child Priyanka first tried gymnastics and later moved into athletics. While competing in middle-distance running events such as the 800m and 1500m, she discovered a greater aptitude for endurance work. On her coach’s advice she switched to race walking in 2011 and began to focus on that discipline. She has described early motivations tied to athletics culture at school, including the prizes given to winners.

Career
Priyanka established herself in race walking through a steady progression at junior and national meets. After training at facilities in Meerut she spent time at the Sports Authority of India centre in Bengaluru in 2015. In March 2018 she joined the Indian Railways as a clerk under the sports quota, continuing to balance employment with athletic development.

Her breakthrough came in February 2021, when she won the 8th Open National and International Race Walking Championship held in Ranchi. That performance produced a national record in the 20 km race walk and qualified her for the Tokyo Olympics. The Ranchi victory is also cited as the moment that marked her professional leap in race walking.

Priyanka continued to raise her international profile at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she earned her first international medal: a silver in the 10,000 m race walk with a personal-best time. That podium finish made her the first Indian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in race walking.

In July 2024 she helped secure an Olympic quota in the marathon race walk mixed relay event for the Paris Olympics.

Records, events and coaching
Priyanka specializes in the 20 km race walk and is recognized as the national record holder in that event with the time recorded when she set the mark at the Ranchi meet. Her coaches have included Gaurav Tyagi and Gurmeet Singh.

Across her competitive history she has amassed numerous medals at junior, senior and national-level competitions, reportedly totaling around sixty medals, with national-level silver medals in 2017–18 and a gold in the All-India Railway competition in 2018. She has also represented India at international race walking championships in Italy and Japan.

Public profile
Priyanka is known for combining a strong competitive focus with visible personal style. She has expressed an interest in fashion and presentation around competitions, attending to kit and hairstyle before races. She is a religious devotee who keeps a small idol of Lord Krishna with her during competitions. She is also noted for painting nail art featuring the flags of countries where she competes.
